On Sexism And Comic Con Panels

ami-angelwings:

geekygothgirl:

It makes me angry that I have to do this, but I’m going to do it anyway. Last week at Denver Comic Con, I went to a panel on women and body image in comics that I had very high hopes for. It was modded by the same woman who’d modded the very excellent Geek Girl panel earlier that day, and had two of the same panelists, but it was absolutely ruined by the actions of one man. I forgot his name because, quite honestly, I started calling him Douchey McFuckface about two minutes into the panel, but I got it from the mod through Twitter. It’s Andrew Mark of Legacy Action Comics, and his Twitter can be found here at https://twitter.com/LegacyAC. I would not normally do this, but this man, over the course of the panel:

*Asked the audience who thought women in comics were objectified, and when the entire audience raised their hands, said “Are you fucking stupid?”

*Justified the hypersexualized portrayal of women in comic books with “Artists just draw what writers give them, it’s the writer’s fault”

*Cut off a professor of media studies in mid-sentence when she tried to point out that yes, there is a connection between media and body image

*Insisted that men and women were equally objectified in comics because Superman has underwear on the outside of his costume

*Interrupted an audience member who was asking a question to talk about how “fucking hilarious” the Hawkeye Initiative is after it was explained by another audience member

*Browsed on his phone during the panel, ignoring audience questions entirely

*When I tried to explain the difference between attraction and objectification, responded by saying inequalities in objectification were clearly women’s fault, because women need to objectify men more

*Glared at and refused to answer an audience member after he tried to defend not drawing muscles on women by saying “we don’t have time for that” and she quite reasonably asked why, then, he had time to draw muscles on men

*Asked the audience if they “know comics aren’t real, right?”

*And, as a capper, used the phrase “twinks” as a homophobic slur at the end of the panel

I have probably been to forty panels at five different cons now, and I have never witnessed a panelist being so actively cruel, rude, and downright unprofessional during a panel. It’s sad because Legacy Action Comics is the kind of small local venture I would normally like to support, but given his behavior, I want everyone to know exactly how unprofessional and misogynistic this man is. At the panel, they openly chastised the audience and essentially told them that the continuing portrayal of skimpily clothed women in comics was their fault, because they “didn’t do anything about it” and “money talks.” Well, I’m doing something about it, and I hope money does talk. If anyone has bought/heard of Legacy Action comics, please don’t buy from them any more-I know I don’t want my money going to support someone who thinks these behaviors and attitudes are acceptable, and I hope you don’t want yours going their either. It’s sad because Legacy Action Comics is, by all appearances, the kind of small, local business I would normally go out of my way to support, but through his boorish and misogynistic behavior, Andrew Mark absolutely shot that in the foot.

I will probably be posting some more of the arguments I heard at this panel, and dissecting their fallaciousness, later, but for now I just wanted to get this out there and let people know that this kind of behavior is not acceptable and (hopefully) will not be tolerated by the geek community.

What a f-ing asshole (and bringing nothing new but old trolly strawman arguments we’ve all heard before) >:\  I hope he doesn’t get invited to any more panels.  Even if they don’t care about his sexism and homophobia (and I hope every future con does), he also sounds like a horrible guest in general.  He wasn’t interested in a discussion, he just wanted to shut everybody up, and make the whole issue go away.  I hope Legacy Action Comics also pays attention to how he’s making their business look to potential customers, because he was there representing them.

what a fuckwit. oh here’s his douchefuck non apology.

this painfully sad comment by the woman who organised the panel makes me simultaneously rage and despair.

Will you be updating the haven any time in the near future?

YES!!!! I swear to god it will happen, somehow I will get back on top of all my bloody HQ related websites!!! It’s always in the back of my kind, I just haven’t had the motivation.

the video's about tabloids and paparazzi harrassment, mostly, actually; it's a little about body stuff but about pregnancy and objectification, I was doing other stuff while I listened but she really mentioned weight stuff only in passing. It was sort of annoying/Incorrect in other ways but not about love-yr-body stuff.

Thank you!!

The Guardian: The sex workers giving disabled people a chance to live out their dreams  → guardian.co.uk

A forthcoming Channel 4 documentary, Can Have Sex Will Have Sex, features the sex lives of four disabled people, one of whom loses his virginity to an escort who has been hired by his mother.

The programme has been labelled “controversial”, but many mothers call the sex and disability helpline, which I run, worried that their disabled son is physically unable to masturbate and desperately needs an outlet. Hiring a sex worker is one option.

They can find responsible sex workers on the TLC-Trust website which was created in 2000 by myself and a disabled man, James Palmer, who was sad about being a virgin in his mid 40s. The hundred or so sex workers who have profiles on the site say they each see about eight disabled clients a month. One told me she recently saw a 38-year-old whose father had called after both parents had sought her out. It was their son’s birthday and he was a virgin. The father brought him down. She bought a birthday cake and a present.

Another of her clients was a virgin too, and wasn’t going to live much longer. His mother contacted her. Now she sees him once every six weeks. It’s been a year. The mother drives the sex worker back to the train station, and says her son is much happier all round since having her visit.

The sex worker says she is used to being introduced to clients with disabilities through a parent, usually a mother rather than a father, and has never been asked to work with someone’s daughter.

If a disabled person loses their virginity with a sex worker in a way that teaches them about their body and how to please a partner, it can set them up to become a confident, knowledgeable and sexually skilled individual who can proceed to finding a partner. However, if they have a progressive condition, their life can feel too full of disappointment and loss to try to find a partner and they may prefer to stay seeing sex workers, with whom a good outcome is guaranteed.

As for disabled women, many tell me they would love to pay somebody who knows what they are doing, who helps them learn what their bodies are capable of enjoying, but most never try. They may be nervous that the man they are paying is not entirely professional and they may not think enough of themselves to treat themselves to the luxury of pleasure. That, I hope is changing. Most of the women I know who have paid have gone to female sex workers, and none of them have involved their mother in the process of making contact.

Sex workers have very special qualities. They are skilled at giving pleasure in whatever way is required. Sometimes carers need to prepare disabled person in advance: undressing, washing and grooming. They may need to be on hand in case of difficulties, such as the onset ofautonomic dysreflexia. They may need to help position the disabled person, and teach the sex worker certain essentials. The best scenario is if the disabled person has seen a “sexual advocate” beforehand, someone with whom they can work out exactly what they want, what they need, and how they want the experience to be, as some disabled people (like non-disabled people) cannot think beyond “I want sex”, and have expectations that can never be met, so will end up disappointed.

When I took a sex worker down to a residential place for severely disabled people for the staff to experience what a sex worker is like, they asked her what she would do if a client bashed her over the head with his uncontrollable arm, or threw up over her and she replied: “I would duck the arm and I would clear up the vomit, that’s part of what I do: clearing up excrement”.

Publicity around the film The Sessions, which explores a man with an iron lung losing his virginity to a “sexual surrogate” has raised awareness and acceptance of disabled people paying for sex. I hope this might extend to an acceptance of disabled people as sexual partners, and sex workers being wonderful people.

I really love the idea of sex workers giving disabled people the chance to be touched in a non-medical way, perhaps for the first time in their lives, to be held in a warm pair of arms and have their sexual dreams respected and lived out.

I never realised owning a Pink hammer meant that you were the downfall of feminism, here I was thinking that we were fighting for a womans right to equality and choice, not to not own pink hammers

no, no, you see it’s all about how stupid we are to not realise they’re cheaply made and also a marketing ploy. because that never possibly occurred to us before and we don’t have long established and well documented relationships with cheap, tawdry, camp and novelty items on our tumblr blogs that at least one of these brave feminists follows, so we really need people to point painstakingly out to us now that the pinks don’t match and they’re ugly but also cheap so we understand properly okay.

January 2013

I have a few thoughts on the news you were just given, Elise. From how I interpreted the scene with the prison cell is that he simply used this to provoke her, to try and make her want to prove herself in his eyes, to show him she's still the Harley Quinn he knows AND, how Glass stated, loves and wants approval of. I think all the skeletons and costumes of "past" Harleys are fake, and that was a lie to get a reaction out of her. He came back later to talk to her, to find out she escaped.

I haven’t read it so I have no idea really. But this news doesn’t make me want to read it.

Jan 12, 2013

I don’t even know how to react to that news except to say… I thought it couldn’t get any more horrible than it already was, but somehow. Somehow… it did.

Oh man. Well it's SQ issue 15, and her and the Joker are fighting. This ends with him locking her in a cellar, surrounded by skeletons clad in HQ gear. It then goes, Joker: 'Instead, I'm going to lock you down here with all the others!' Harley:' Others what?' Joker: 'Other Harleys! What, you thought you were the first one? I can tell you this. You won't even be the last.' :|

…

what.

I guess in New 52, they hadn’t changed the Joker enough and were jealous of The Dark Knight for making him so edgy.

So they burned off his face.

An Experimental Question

gailsimone:

Just answer with your true feelings please, no one will be graded. :)

What would you like to see from DC and Marvel in the year 2013?

My demands for DC are simple:

- scrap this shitty reboot
- put Harley back in her old costume & Joker’s face back on properly
- Harley and Joker back together causing trouble like old days

I mean, I guess the last two are implied in the whole reboot being scrapped; I just wanna be REALLY clear.

Mind you, I have not bought (or read) a single DC comic in the entire last year. The reboot cost them this fan at least.

But I will without any type of qualms unfollow anyone who reblogs pictures of an ongoing rape.

I don’t care if I’ve been following you since the dawn of Tumblr. I don’t care if we’re absolutely best buddies. One picture and you’re out.

#pixellated or not #I don’t fucking care #I don’t even care that you potentially trigger your readers #I care that you are perpetuating the violation of the victim

yes this yes this

ima have to do this.

I haven’t been scrolling my dash enough to see if this has been happening a lot from the people I follow, but I know the case this is referring to, I saw it on my dash earlier today and it did trigger me.

I haven’t unfollowed the people in question and I’m not going to because I don’t think there was any ill will, just a lack of thought. But seriously, I just want to bring this to your attention:

“I care that you are perpetuating the violation of the victim”

THIS. This is what happens when you reblog that photo. You are circulating a photo of someone’s RAPE.

Can you please, PLEASE think beyond your own (justified) anger and disgust at the animals responsible to consider and PRIORITISE the victim of this terrible crime, who has already been so revoltingly violated and who is being repeatedly violated with a photo of the abuse she was subjected to getting circulated far and wide. It is just the grossest disregard of her and what she has been through in favour of eliciting reactions in people who don’t even know this girl.

Can you also please remember THIS GIRL IS SIXTEEN. She’s underage, as far as I understand it, within her state.

It’s just a little responsibility that you have to take.

tumblr guys. just for shits and giggles, I’m reading my April Fools BatmanxHarley fanfic and seriously. guys. it’s making me want to puke.

I can’t believe I even managed to write any of that!!!

She didn’t know how he managed it. Getting past all that security, evading detection, leaving no trace he was ever there. She didn’t need to know, so long as he came. He was so clever and brilliant, nothing was really a challenge to him and night after night he came to her and they had their most secret and sacred time together – within the very walls meant to imprison, they found freedom in each other’s arms.

Harley blushed at the wicked thoughts now dancing through her mind and stretched her arms up above her head, giggling a little. Never before had she known a lover like him. Not one so certain, so skilled and so absolutely focused on the final outcome, a sure reflection of his lifetime spent in innovation and genius. Nobody could stop him when he put his mind to something – and he brought those skills to bed.

VOMIT!!!!!!!!!

How did I ever write this??? anything to make you guys laugh. :P

On Old Man Harris

harlequinaesthetics:

kevindrakewriter:

What he said was no doubt dickish. I wonder though no one sets out to be a dick. So what was his intent?

Was he just saying that Cosplay girls who aren’t into the books of the characters they portray somehow hurting someone. I mean despite the vitriol there is a tinge of pain in his words. He is genuinely upset about something. I mean he is an artist after-all and not a writer. He just may not have the skills to write exactly what he means. No one sets off to write something like that just to fill in time. He’s trying to say something and while he failed miserably there was the intent.

Is he concerned for women who degrade themselves for attention?

Is he worried about the feelings of nerd boys who feel manipulated and ultimately the pain of rejection?

Is he commenting about an industry who struggles with readership and sees a group of people taking advantage of a public figure without buying into merchandise of that figure?

Or maybe he really does hate women. Or Cosplayers. Or nerd boys who fall in love and let their heart get toyed with.

I just want us as a comic book community to try and see how this maybe a bit more complicated. Not saying what Old Man Harris did was right. He is entitled to his thoughts. I have no doubt he should have thought twice before making them public. I just want to stop making some one an absolute simplistic symbol for a complicated social-artistic-economic situation.

Are you kidding me right now?

> Is he concerned for women who degrade themselves for attention?

What’s degrading about being confident in your own skin? Surely in the medium of cosplay, showing the right amount of skin is an art form.

> Is he worried about the feelings of nerd boys who feel manipulated and ultimately the pain of rejection?

Manipulated by girls dressing up? Jesus Christ how simple are these “nerd boys” of which you speak? I’m offended on their behalf! And rejection? So, because a girl is dressed in lyra, that means she should be available to any “nerd boy” who wishes to approach her, romantically? Uhm.

> Or maybe he really does hate women. Or Cosplayers. Or nerd boys who fall in love and let their heart get toyed with.

Bingo.

oh CRY ME A FUCKING RIVER, he did SO set out to be a dick AND SO DO MANY PEOPLE WHEN THEY SAY SHIT LIKE THIS.

“It’s always been thought of as Harley needs Joker. I’m exploring a little bit that the Joker needs Harley and it’s a two-way street. This is truly a relationship of equals more than it is ‘I’m the boss and you’re just walking behind me.
This is Harley really trying to figure out who she is and the Joker may like that, he may not like that, and it’s interesting for him, too. He’s going to be put in a situation where he has to come back to this and things aren’t as easy as they used to be.”

So done with all the Deadshot + Harley = OTP posts.
So done with douchebags giving cosplay “advices” ie telling people not to “dress like sluts”.
So done with constant woobifying and pitying the sweet little angel that poor unloved HQ is.
Most of all done with that stupid panel from Snyder’s “Tease” which is torn out of context and used to support the above point.
Ugh.

Because sheeyit, NO ONE has ever tried to compensate for their own inadequacy by targeting total strangers minding their own business and having a good time by insulting them before. You’re such a unique, beautiful snowflake. Look at you, sitting there behind your computer screen, getting all pissed off over people you don’t even know putting on a costume and hanging out together to enjoy themselves. You’re so original. But seriously, it’s a fucking word. You all don’t need to jump down my throat.

Our deep thinking has deleted these posts from her blog, whilst moaning a lot about how we’re just taking things TOO LITERALLY and it’s JUST A WORD. She didn’t mean EVERYONE.

And I don’t think she understood that I don’t care what she thinks about my cosplay and that some of the people replying to her don’t even cosplay Harley.

She also seems unable to understand that making a public post and tagging it under the hq tag means other people are going to see it.

Because, well, she’s a little bit special. ie: belligerent.

If you’re going to be an asshole publicly, your ‘intent’ means jack shit. As does the fact it’s ‘just an opinion’. Other people are going to see it and they’re going to tell you THEIR opinion in response to YOURS. If you seriously get off on being a total dick about perfect strangers who are doing something purely FOR FUN for absolutely no reason, people are going to react. People generally do react to assholes. You know. Because assholes are unlikeable and no one asked for their opinion to begin with.

Batman #13 thoughts on Jokers face...

enasnivolz:

goubatsu:

I think I know where Joker is going in Batman 13… The Joker actually didn’t cut his face off! The entire thing is just a long slow burn to his inevitable showdown with Batman, wherein he will rip off his mask, revealing his intact face, and say “This is it, Batsy - our face-off!” It’s a multi-story arc to build to one really lame pun, and is thus the Joker’s greatest joke of all - a joke on the readers themselves.

I snorted

that’s too clever for DC
