remember when there were actual panels of Poison Ivy punching and beating Harley (and remember in their dynamic Harley is really submissive to Ivy) and verbally abusing her casually, all the time, and scans daily said it wasn’t abuse, just playful squabbling hahaHAHAHAhaha

Ivy totally should be as manipulative and self-centered as the Joker.

God I really need to get off my ass and do that fanart I wanted to do of a bunch of the Batman characters. I have headcanons like whoa.

She IS totally as manipulative and self-centered as the Joker!

AND it is true, as it is with the Joker, that Harley provokes genuine emotions of love and caring in her as well.

And finally it is true that this is fiction, they are villains, it doesn’t have to be perfect or ideal so long as it is depicted with awareness and complexity.

I am so grossed out by the attitude of these people that Harley has to be ‘rescued’ as well. I saw a couple of people swear up and down at scans daily that there was ‘no way’ Harley slept her way to her grades… they could not handle the idea she was ever anything but a passive, helpless victim at all times…

Oh god. My headcanon is that Harley can be totally manipulative when she wants to be. And she’s just really good at understanding people, so she’s a GREAT shrink. It’s just not as important to her as pleasing the people she loves.

I really wish the canon versions of characters were as good as the fanfic ones. (Nu52, why do you exist and why do you suck so much???)

Harley IS totally manipulative. It is shown in canon, when they’re doing her right!

halfmeasured replied to your post: “remember when there were actual panels of Poison Ivy punching and…”:
yah and even beyond how ivy is physically towards her she’s also very controlling too. harley’s two major relationships are abusive and ppl can’t really accept that the f/f one is.

people absolutely refuse to acknowledge how the f/f one is.

admittedly some JxH shippers have argued that ship isn’t abusive either, but it’s really a minority to the folks who seriously truly believe HxI is this idyllic utopian rship of pure fluffy equal love that will ~*save*~ Harley.

I’m not down with either: both rships are abusive, and… I love them!

remember when Paul Dini wrote that story where Poison Ivy kept snuff videos of all these people she killed and whilst it arguably wasn’t that great a story it was still awesome because it was intentionally placing her back into a villain role after she’d been watered down into this antihero for a while and the point was the bat family had become complacent with this dangerous, vicious woman and all those idiots at scans daily absolutely pitched a fit about how DARE Dini do that because IVY WASN’T REALLY EVIL!!!111!!!!1

man, I would take evil Ivy any day of the week, man. evil Ivy is AWESOME.

how many people would worship and glorify umbridge if she wasn’t a woman and played by a moderately good-looking man

Uhm. No.
When exactly was the last time Snape physically abused and tortured his students? You know, the whole magic quill punishment, or maybe that one time good old Dolores used Cruciatus on a teenager to extract information?
Hating Umbridge has nothing to do with her being a woman. It has everything to do with her being a fucking scumbag.

Snape is SUCH a scumbag though. He nurses a creepy life long obsession with a dead woman and uses the fact she chose another man to pick on her son and all his friends in really awful, unfair ways. He may never have been physically abusive (and actually I think he was once or twice? I can’t remember) but he was definitely psychologically abusive and for no damn good reason. At all. He bent over backwards to make 11 year old kids’ lives hell. He was mean and nasty and his fixation on Harry’s mum was weird (esp as he didn’t even consider her equal to him). A lot has been written about this by actual HP fans who know way more about it than me, but Snape is an asshole.

As for Umbridge, an undoubtable scumbag and is the reason she is hated but willing to bet actual money if she were a male character there’d be a whole fandom around her (juuuuust like there is with Snape… and the almost equally arseholish Sirius). Like people hate her because she is evil but if she were a dude, not everyone would hate her. Which is what the OP is saying: NOT that Umbridge isn’t a scumbag but that if she were male, a lot of people would overlook that to glorify her in ways they don’t because she is female. Like, it’s not actually a big deal to have a bit of objective perspective when it comes to recognising how sexism plays out in fandom dynamics. It doesn’t mean you can’t love Snape or hate Umbridge. The OP isn’t saying either. The OP is observing how sexism manifests in fandom settings.

(this same sexism is the reason female villains like Poison Ivy are repeatedly subjected to being made ambiguous heroes; no one wants to allow a truly outrightly evil female character BECAUSE misogyny, women must always be softened and made more palatable along the way. The fact Umbridge never is is quite unusual)

(I say all this as someone who was very emotionally engaged with Snape’s story btw)

(and Bellatrix is attractive and portrayed by a cult actress, which negates her evilness and allows fans to engage with her; this is making her more palatable!)

jesus, idk what to tell you, if you don’t know already by now I am a diehard JokerxHarley shipper, then pull your heads out of your arses cos that’s the only way I can figure you missed the memo.

it doesn’t make me less of a feminist, any less of a queer woman, any less of a person with a history of having been abused and my PERSONAL PREFERENCE for one ship over another doesn’t mean I can’t perceive/consider the possible avenues of exploration in the other ship.  SPOILER ALERT: I can, I have and I still prefer JokerHarley.

and MOST OF ALL IT DOESN’T MAKE ME ANY LESS THE LEADING FAN AUTHORITY ON ALL THINGS HARLEY QUINN.

Suck it up.

Cosplay has changed.

collectiveconscience:

"Cosplay has changed. It’s no longer about fun, friendships or ethnicity. It’s an endless series of popularity battles, fought by elitists and drama queens. Cosplay, and its consumption of life, has become a well-oiled machine. Cosplay has changed. ID tagged convention badges through ID tagged checkpoints, use ID tagged gear. fabric inside their bodies enhance and regulate their ego. popularity control. drama control. Emotion control. ambassador control. Everything is monitored, and kept under control. Cosplay has changed. The age of closeness has become the age of distance. All in the name of gaining popularity from taking pictures at the gazeboo. And he who controls the gazeboo, controls cosplay. Cosplay has changed. When the drama is under total control, Cosplay…becomes routine."

—-Vincent Villamil

lol.

I’ve been out of the scene a long time and the competitiveness all in the name of obtaining some sort of minor level internet celebrity status was something that was really turning me off at the end. Everytime I talk to one of my cosplayer friends about cosplay, they tell me it’s just gotten worse.
