Comic Royale: I don't get why Read Comics in Public day couldn't have just stayed what it was...

August 30, 2010

I think that changing something like that was kind of like a slap in the face.  I’m brand new to this community so I wanted to have something that I could actually participate in and feel like a part of it for once. But then for Tumblr, it turned into essentially a women’s only day and I’m just like damn… couldn’t this have been organized for next month or next week? Because I’m all for women, I support the fight, all of my heroes in my life have been women. But for this, even though the event wasn’t that big of a deal, I was kind of hoping it would have been more “universal/as a whole” instead of the whole “we’re separating it and making it about us but you can still participate.”

And you know, it might just be because I follow a LOT more women on here than I do men…

You are the exact reason we NEEDED to raise visbility of women reading comics in public.

You think we’re trying to make it “all about us”? Try being on our side for a change, when our considerations, interests, desires, thoughts and feelings are constantly ridiculed, dismissed, disregarded. Try having people say “who cares if women read comics”. Try living in a world that actively discriminates against you because of your fucking gender and then loving an entertainment medium that INSISTS you do not exist, that what you are interested in does not matter, that how you feel is worth spit.

You think you’re being excluded? Slapped in the face? Try living every day being excluded and slapped in the face - as you have done here to us, yet one more person who is so busy complaining about what he THINKS he doesn’t have, he can’t even see what he does - and that it far outweighs what we have.  Try to comprehend that the comics industry is ALREADY ALL ABOUT YOU.

We have ONE TINY SPACE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD to try and carve out our own niche in a seriously male dominated industry, ONE TINY SPACE where it’s not all about you guys, and you begrudge it? ONE TINY BLOG on one tiny blogosphere against the countless websites, forums, communities, blogs, chat rooms and so on out there that are male-dominated (and where you could easily have gone to escape from teh terrible womens doing the unthinkable and trying to actually be considered as a part of this community), and you pitch a hissy fit because you feel excluded when there are UNENDING SPACES for you to go - and we make ONE SPACE ours. ONE. And you resent it?

Get your priorities sorted out. That you cannot even see that you are already so favoured in this medium, that you interests and needs and desires are already so protected and so sacred and just how damn privileged you are makes me sick.

The world is already your playground. Why can’t we have one little corner of it?

Why do YOU have to ruin it for US when you already have so much?

And don’t bother with the ‘I’m on the womens side, really!’ argument, because you’re clearly not.  YOU ARE NOT FOOLING ANYONE except, maybe, yourself.  You are clearly not on our side. If you were, the reason we needed to raise visibility of women reading comics would already be apparent to you; and you wouldn’t be so arrogant and numbskulled as to think we “took over”.

That you interpret us wanting to actively participate and be visible doing so as ‘excluding’ you sure says a whole lot about your real feelings towards women and your insecurity in yourself - as well as your totally unpacked privilege.
