Plus of the issue?
Joker’s damn hot.Being as … out of it as I have been, I totally missed when this came out (don’t even have the issue yet).
Some good moments. But HQ does not ring true for character to me as Harleen Quinzel. At…
^ Agreed. Writing Harley: UR DOIN IT RONG
First of all, if Joker ever came across someone who threatened to “kick his nuts up through his mouth”, he’d find it hilarious and pitiful, not impressive; yet his reaction seems to be “WH0A SHEZ EJ-EE &ND OMG SO DIFFRINT”. Also, that comment is just cringe-worthily not Harleen. She was confident as a doctor and believed in herself, sure, but she still desperately wanted approval from coworkers and even Joker, and most of all wanted to be seen as a professional. This is a comment from someone way too cocky to be a vulnerable, realistic intern.
Also can we all just agree that this is a clear attempt to make her SOOPAR-BADASS OMG! Clownyprincess has said it before and I will too; what makes Harley scary is her innocence. She was just a (fairly) “normal” person before Joker completely warped her mind. Bamf.
But most importantly, and it’s certainly been something I’ve personally been wondering about with this whole “badass Harley” campaign; why does Harley need to “naturally” be fit for The Joker? In my opinion it completely cheapens the story. To suggest that she was always ready for a criminal life/Joker should be impressed by her from the get-go is sooooo boring.
Think about it, folks. Joker was blatantly trying to ruin whatever life she had because he found it funny to unravel such a promising young doctor. He wasn’t all, “MMM DAMN DAT GURLZ SO DIFFRINT SHE NEEDA HUUK UP WIT ME XOXO”. He messed with her for fun, expecting nothing to come out of it but a good laugh at seeing something so valued in society destroyed.
However, in the process, she ending up impressing him with her will and ability to go along with it and accept it all and completely adapt to his world. Not because she was naturally some unrealistic bamf. She was a real, common everyday person who ended up impressing and getting through to The Joker.
tldr;
HARLEY GRADUALLY IMPRESSES JOKER BY SURPRISING HIM WITH HER ABILITY TO LET GO OF HER SAFE, FORMER LIFE > HARLEY NATURALLY HAS A BORING, HARD-ASS-WOMAN ARCHETYPE PERSONALITY. Yawn.
